These are some excerpts from the Coming Out Step-by-Step By Ramon Johnson, About.com Guide.
1. Create a personal inventory when coming out: getting to know yourself is a key part of the process.
2. Know that you are not alone: There are many resources, such as gay community centers and gay online communities, where you can find others dealing with similar issues.
3. Deal with stereotypes, discrimination and hate against gays: the gay community is just as diverse as any other community and each gay man is an individual.
4. Tell family and friends you're gay when you're ready. Come out to family and friends at a pace that makes YOU comfortable.
5. Don't give up on marriage or children. Contrary to popular belief, being gay does not condemn you to a life alone without kids.
6. Learn about gay love, relationships and sex.
7. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
